The ongoing SNSF-Innosuisse project www.spatial-sustainable-finance.ch is collecting and integrating multidimensional data to measure the dynamics of biodiversity in different regions of the world. As part of the 1st Rapid Action Call, a data-based model was developed that transforms local, nature-related risks into financial terms and shows how damage to ecosystems can affect companies’ balance sheets and share prices. On this basis, an interactive interface prototype was developed for decision-makers. The prototype integrates web maps with information condensed into graphics in the form of a dashboard.

The most important project results:

  • Data basis for the calculation of BioVaR
  • Process for calculating BioVaR, based on spatial data and LCA data
Interactive website biovar.ch with dashboard, methodology and results
  • Working Paper: Posth, Jan-Alexander and Schwendner, Peter and Laube, Patrick and Orpiszewski, Tomasz: “Bio-Value-at-Risk: A Concept to Assessing the Implications of Biodiversity Risks on Portfolio Management using Geospatial Analysis”: https://dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.4784271

Data inputs are now to be generated on the basis of the project results in order to calibrate the model. The project team is in contact with scientists from the European COST Action 22138 REMINDNET to refine the model approach as well as with companies from the mining sector, the downstream industry and investors.
