Digitalization Initiative of the Zurich Higher Education Institutions

The mission of Digitalization Initiative of the Zurich Higher Education Institutions (DIZH) is to promote cooperation on digitalization issues between higher education institutions in Zurich, thereby strengthening the greater Zurich area as a hub for research and business. The University of Zurich (UZH), Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) and Zurich University of Teacher Education (PHZH) are part of the DIZH network, which aims to advance research and innovation on digitalization by using interdisciplinary approaches.

DIZH wants to strengthen the Canton of Zurich’s competitiveness as a hub for research and development. The initiative aims to help industry and society take advantage of the opportunities offered by digitalization and use them to benefit the greater Zurich area.

DIZH consists of a research cluster, an innovation program and an education program.

DIZH’s research cluster makes use of interdisciplinary, cross-university research to open up new perspectives on the digitalization process and enable innovative forms of collaboration.

DIZH’s innovation program promotes projects that give rise to innovation while seizing or expanding the opportunities offered by digital transformation.

The education program leverages the cooperation between DIZH’s partner universities in order to pave the way for innovative developments in teaching, education and digitalization.

DIZH is part of a network of researchers, students and experts from our partner universities.

The “UZH Digital Society Initiative” (DSI) is a scientific institution supported by all faculties of the University of Zurich (UZH) and open to all members of the UZH. It aims to promote independent scientific reflection and innovation on issues relating to the digital society, to prepare UZH students to help shape the digital society, to engage in a continuous discourse with the public and to support political decision-making.

The digital transformation is here! This comes with great opportunities, and challenges people, institutions and structures with new questions. To live up to our responsibility as a public educational and research institution, we are addressing this topic holistically by asking: “What does digital transformation mean for us as people, university and society?”

Art, design and communication are experimental fields for a critical analysis of the possibilities of digitalization. In exploring the interaction between digitalization and the arts, researchers, teachers and students at ZHdK highlight topics of general social relevance.

Digital transformation continues to affect all areas of life and poses new challenges to science, society, and the education system. The Zurich University of Teacher Education (PH Zurich) shapes technological development while insisting on values and competencies such as creativity, critical thinking and empathy. In this sense, it continues its research and development work on innovative teaching-learning processes and contributes to digital innovations in teaching and learning.

DIZH is jointly run by representatives from its partner universities: this includes management committees (Steering Committee and Management Board), advisory committees (Innovation Panel) and the Managing Office. The Managing Office is responsible for DIZH’s operational side. DIZH also consults members of its partner universities in the spirit of exchanging ideas and information and seeking out expertise.
