The Feeling Machine: Creating the Illusion of Life

Prof. Christoph Hölscher, COG ETH and Prof. Emily Cross, SBS ETH, welcome the Cognitive Artist Manuel F. Hendry from Zurich University of Arts / Zürcher Hochschule der Künste ZHKD.
Manuel Flurin Hendry investigates computational models of emotion through the lens of performance. For his ongoing research project «The Feling Machine», a variety of human-machine encounters in emotionally salient scenarios were staged to explore the development of compelling virtual agents using theatre techniques. Here, he presents «Stanley», a digital sculpture designed to engage audiences with the spontaneous and captivating mood swings of an artificial human.
